Written by curate Joseph Mohr in 1816 and set to music by village school teacher and organist Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818, this song has been translated into more than 300 languages. It is sung on every continent and is shared by all the large Christian churches. Silent Night was included in the UNESCO list of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage in 2011 and was, in its time, also an enormous commercial hit. To celebrate the 200 year anniversary, cultural historian Werner Thuswaldner tells the story of a song that has brought together people of different nations and has enjoyed global success. It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic and controversial documentary novel. In 1938 the Sandgrube vineyard – one of the most famous vineyard estates in the Wachau valley – is owned by the Jewish businessman Paul Robitschek. His partner is August Rieger. Robitschek and the supposed baron are business partners, as well as glamorous lovers. Denunciations clear the path for the Aryanisation of an estate that would eventually become the basis of the famous Krems vintners’ cooperative – a name that is synonymous with wine and culture far beyond the national borders. This Aryanisation has to date never been the subject of investigation. The authors were able to recover a hoard of documents, enabling them to tell a staggering story of betrayal and loyalty, love and business, destruction and repression.

Rudolf Wacker (1893–1939) gilt als einer der wichtigsten österreichischen Vertreter der „Neuen Sachlichkeit“. Im August 1914 wurde er eingezogen, vor dem Krieg war er Kunststudent in Wien und Weimar. Im Gefangenenlager im sibirischen Tomsk, wo er fünf Jahre zubrachte, entwickelte er erstmals eine eigenständige Bildsprache. Nach Bregenz kehrte er erst im September 1920 zurück. Künstlerisch verdichtete er seine Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen in Stillleben, Selbstporträts und Landschaften. Gleichzeitig zog ihn die Kunst der jungen Sowjetunion magisch an. Der Band zeigt eine umfassende Auswahl seiner Werke sowie erstmals alle bekannten Zeichnungen, die im Lager entstanden sind. Daneben machen Fotografien, Tagebücher und Briefe deutlich, wie prägend die Kriegs- und Lagererfahrungen für Rudolf Wacker waren.
