Seek Sanity in the Analog
What has helped me the past week, as I have been stuck in one place, with my family? Not the news. Or googling coronavirus symptoms. Or frantic text chains with friends. No. What has really helped are the analog activities that provide a pure escape from all that is going on outside the door. Reading a book to my children. Baking bread. Playing a board game with my kids. Listening to a record. These activities are contained. They ask nothing of you, require no subscription, no connection, no software updates that do not work. And they provide a pure escape for the mind, at least for an hour or so. Digital technology is essential in this crisis. We need to speak with loved ones and friends outside our homes, need to work remotely, need to find out essential information. But it can be overwhelming, and the stream of information is incessant. When it feels too much, put the phone away, in another room, or even turn it off. Pick up a book. Play a game. Do a puzzle. Take your time to breathe. Seek sanity in analog.
